Mencher http://www.kenney-mencher.com/Biography and Résumé I
was born in Brooklyn February of 1965. During much of my
childhood I lived in Brooklyn the Bronx, upstate NY, Sarasota Florida
and Manhattan. (Both my mother and father divorced and
remarried.) The real hero of my childhood is my older brother
Marc who literally changed my diapers, taught me how to do all the
things a person should know how to do.
I started to learn to paint and draw when I was six or seven years old.
As
a young adult at the High School of Art and Design I dabbled in
non-traditional relationships, drugs, museums. I also began to
learn to paint in the classrooms of Irwin Greenburg who taught me how
to oil and watercolor.
After
dropping out of the High School, I worked construction demolishing the
interiors and renovating buildings on the Lower East Side of
Manhattan. I was having a rough emotional time and once again my
older brother and his partner Kirk rescued when they invited me to move
to Cincinnati Ohio with them. I worked as a cook in a Pizza
Place on Mount Adams, studied during the day and painted as much as I
could. After a year of college at the University of
Cincinnati I went back to the Bronx where I finished college at CUNY
Lehman. A fantastic college!
After completing my undergraduate studies, I went on to travel to California and Ohio to complete my graduate studies.
Since
2014 or so I’ve stopped working galleries, mainly because I wanted to
sell paintings at lower prices. I also like building a more
personal relationship with my collectors. This change also
allowed me to focus on themes that Hang Gallery in San Francisco,
dropped me for, and the STRS Gallery in Sacrament censored. (Sexual
charged paintings of men and women mainly from a gay/queer/homoerotic
point of view.)
After
17 years of teaching art history and studio courses at Ohlone College
in Fremont, California I retired in June 2016 to pursue painting full
time.
